Kansas Concerns of Police Survivors

About and Announcements

Our Purpose

The purpose of the Kansas Chapter of C.O.P.S. is to provide peer support to the surviving family members of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty by offering emotional support, aiding survivors in understanding the judicial process and providing information about available services within the local community, the state and the nation. Our aim is to offer longer-term support and friendship, after the initial wave of community and department support, media attention, and public sympathy has diminished for the survivor. As survivors ourselves, we recognize the needs and traumas each new survivor will face as the years pass. Training of state law enforcement agencies in the appropriate handling of line-of-duty death procedures is also a priority for our group.

Who We Are and Who We Serve

Kansas Concerns of Police Survivors (Kansas C.O.P.S.) is a not-for-profit organization. On March 17, 2001 an organizational meeting was held in Salina, Kansas to discuss formation of a Kansas Chapter. On that day, it was decided and approved with a unanimous vote of the attendees to start a Kansas Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors. Our C.O.P.S. charter plaque was presented at National Police Week in May 2001. Kansas C.O.P.S. serves all 105 counties in Kansas and is one of 55 chapters of the national organization Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.).

Our membership is more than 350 strong and each time we lose an officer in one of our 105 counties, we gain more members. There is no membership fee to join Kansas C.O.P.S. Each and every member has already paid the ultimate price -- the loss of a family member, colleague or friend to a line-of-duty death in law enforcement in the state of Kansas. The heroism and bravery of those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice must never be forgotten; therefore, we are committed to see that their memory and acts of bravery live forever.
